About Me

Hi! My name is Vanessa Wochner, PT and I am a Licensed Physical Therapist with 28 years of experience and I specialize in orthopedics and sports medicine. I am a graduate of the Nutritional Therapy Association and I am so excited to share holistic nutritional information, recipes and even some fitness tips with you here on my blog or as part of my offered services.

For years I struggled with my weight and my health.  I was overweight as a young child and after having my son in 2003 I had so many different symptoms….fatigue, inability to lose the baby weight with continued weight gain year after year, decreased strength, difficulty sleeping, moodiness, headaches, inflamed adenoids, GERD….the list goes on and on.  For over 13 years I would tell my physician my symptoms but they would attributed it to being overweight, not exercising enough, not eating right and being lazy.  My thyroid was checked, but in hindsight, the proper thyroid panel was never checked.  I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I joined popular commercial weight loss programs in my lifetime…..and I was never able to lose more than 7-12 pounds and when I did lose the weight, it slowly crept back on over time.  I was frustrated and I felt like a failure.  Here I was, successful in my career as a physical therapist helping others with their health, but I couldn’t get my own health together.

In 2015 I started reading numerous books about nutrition and I listened to a variety of health podcasts.  I just couldn’t get enough information.  My mind was insatiable for knowledge.  I was inspired by how others had changed their heath and changed their lives by eating a nutritious diet.  Also around that time, I tried eliminating grains from my diet and although I was feeling somewhat better, and the elimination of grains made so much sense to me, I still hadn’t found the key….but I knew I was on the right track.  I then heard about the Whole30 elimination diet (no grains, beans, alcohol, dairy, sugar, etc) and I gave that a go for about 6 months and was only able to lose about 7 pounds and I was still feeling fatigued, experiencing headaches and just not feeling myself.

I then learned about how functional medical physicians, also known as integrative medical physicians, look for the root cause of medical conditions and they find out what is truly causing disease.  I decided to search for one near me and low and behold I came across the most amazing functional medicine physician who had a practice less than 10 minutes from my home.  I remember going to see him in November of 2016.  He performed a physical, ordered a comprehensive blood panel and handed me a book called Eat Fat, Get Thin: Why the Fat We Eat is The Key to Sustained Weight Loss and Vibrant Health by Dr. Mark Hyman.  I took it home and placed it on my night stand.  I didn’t read it right away….but I looked at it sitting there everyday.  Then about 3 weeks later, I decided to read it…..and it just made so much sense to me.  My physician did find that I was sensitive to gluten and he diagnosed me with sub-clinical hypothyroidism.  Finally, I found someone who didn’t think I was lazy or crazy and was going to help me.

I continued digging into what I could do to continue to heal my body and I decided to try a Ketogenic diet.  I worked on addressing my food sensitivities and healing my gut.  I lost 25 pounds over 6 months.  Today I feel like a new person.  My energy is back, my headaches are gone, I am exercising again, I sleep like a baby every night and I am happy.  I am still on this journey….but I know that my body is healing and heading in the right direction.  This blog is not about how to loose weight.  It is about how to nourish the body so that it can heal…..and then the weight will come off.  This is why I was never successful with common, commercial weight loss programs or other fad diets….my body needed to heal and to be nourished from a properly prepared, nutrient-dense, whole food diet.

I was so incredibly inspired that I decided to go back to school through the Nutritional Therapy Association so that I could help others and spread the word!  I am excited to share many things with you along my journey and I would love to help you along in your journey.

There is a natural way to feel better….nourishment from the right foods.  I want to help you to Live the Life you deserve!
